The second edition of the Dakar Translation Symposium: Africa and Her Globalization which will be held between June 13 and 19, 2023
The second edition of the Dakar Translation Symposium: Africa and Her Globalization which will be held between June 13 and 19, 2023, fosters a global dialogue that is theoretical, cultural and imaginative, and brings together speakers and participants of national and international research capacities from various disciplines who are invested in Africa and the Black diasporas.
The symposium will end with an optional Juneteenth Memorial gathering on Gorée Island on June 19. (Pricing details for the Gorée trip to be announced at the conference)

Airport: Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS), Dakar, Senegal,
The flight is about 9 hours from New York (JFK) to Senegal on a nonstop flight, or about 15 to 19 hours with one connection. The ride from the airport to the hotel area is about 2 hours.
Airport ground transfer and transportation options:
Uber is now available in Senegal, but please be advised that it is an expensive option.
Heetch and Yango are two other affordable transportation services to help you get around Dakar.
Taxis are also available as you exit the airport but they only take cash. (Please know the exact location and price before you enter the taxi)
You can also reserve an airport & inter-regional transfer through the Senegal Shuttle company, and make a reservation ahead of time here.
Currency and Exchange Rate
The currency in Senegal is The West African Franc (FCFA)
The current exchange rate is 1 USD = 609.48 FCFA
Any international airport should have a currency exchange for FCFA. Visitors are encouraged to exchange their currency before landing in Senegal, Dakar.
Local business and service providers in Dakar operate using mostly cash, and most don't have the ability to accept credit cards. ATMs are accessible throughout Dakar such as Bank of America and Chase if you need more cash during your stay.

More Useful Information and What To Bring
- When in Senegal, always keep your passport secured and in a safe place.
- Passports are required to check-in to hotels and residences, and are a mandatory requirement when traveling to Goree Island
- Weather information: A hat, sunscreen and an umbrella or raincoat. Mid-June temperatures in Dakar range from 74° to 84° (23°C to 29°C), with occasional rain showers.
- Bring an international adaptor and power converter. It's a good idea to purchase this ahead of going to Senegal, because they are not readily available.
- Take a minimum supply of 1.5 times the amount needed of all medications you currently take. Keep medication in original containers and in your carryon luggage.
- Known allergies: bring Epipen x2 (if needed, bring prescription to carry needles)
